Data Center to Cloud

Atlassian Data Center is reaching end of life.

Atlassian has set a three-year runway to move off Data Center and onto Cloud. Here is the timeline that matters, what it means for your teams, and how we run the move so nothing breaks and no history is lost.

The timeline

Three dates that decide your runway.

Atlassian is phasing out Data Center over three years. The sooner you plan, the more of the runway you keep for a careful move instead of a scramble.

  1. March 30, 2026 New sales end

Atlassian stops selling new Data Center subscriptions and Marketplace apps to new customers.

  2. March 30, 2028 Last renewals and expansions

The final date existing customers can buy new Data Center licenses, Marketplace apps, and license expansions.

  3. March 28, 2029 Data Center end of life

All Data Center licenses and their Marketplace app licenses expire and go read-only. Security updates and support end.

After the deadline

What end of life actually means.

End of life is not a soft deadline. When your Data Center licenses expire, Jira, Confluence, and the rest go read-only: the history is still there to read, but your teams cannot create or change work, and no further security patches ship.

A frozen platform is a stalled delivery system, and an unpatched one is a growing risk. Both are avoidable with a move planned well ahead of the date rather than forced by it.

Why move early

Waiting costs more than a license.

The teams already on Cloud are building fluency with the AI and automation that is Cloud-first, release after release. A late move closes the feature gap in a weekend, but not the fluency gap.

We have written about why a migration is really the cleanup you keep postponing in leaving the Data Center, and why the move is a transformation rather than a lift in migration is a transformation.

How we run it

A migration that is also a cleanup.

We plan and run the move as a certified Silver Solution Partner, and we run it alongside Atlassian Ascend so you use every incentive and program available to you.

  • History intact

Your issues, attachments, and audit trail come across whole, so institutional memory survives the move.

  • Cleanup, not a copy

We retire dead workflows and consolidate duplicate configuration, so you land on a platform built for how teams work now.

  • Secure by design

Data residency, access control with Atlassian Guard, and an audit trail are designed into the move, not bolted on after.

  • A cutover teams barely feel

We sequence the move so delivery keeps running and the switch lands without a lost week.

Questions

Data Center to Cloud, answered.

When does Atlassian Data Center reach end of life?
Atlassian has set Data Center end of life for March 28, 2029. On that date, Data Center licenses and their Marketplace app licenses expire and the products become read-only. Atlassian continues technical support and security updates for critical issues until then.
What happens to Jira and Confluence Data Center after March 2029?
Once the licenses expire, the products go read-only. Your teams can still see the data, but they cannot create or change work, and no further security patches ship. That freezes delivery and leaves any new vulnerability unaddressed, which is why moving before the deadline matters.
Can I still buy or renew Atlassian Data Center?
Existing customers can buy new Data Center licenses, apps, and expansions until March 30, 2028. New customers can no longer start on Data Center as of March 30, 2026. After 2028, renewals and expansions are no longer available.
Do I have to move to Cloud, or are there other options?
Cloud is the path Atlassian is investing in, and the newer capabilities like Atlassian Rovo and Atlassian Intelligence are Cloud-first. For most teams a planned move to Cloud is the right call, but we help you weigh it against your security, residency, and compliance needs before you commit.
Will I lose my history, apps, or customizations when I migrate?
No. A well-run migration brings your issue history, attachments, and audit trail across intact. It is also the moment to retire dead workflows and consolidate duplicate configuration, so you land on a clean platform rather than copying the clutter across.
How long does a Data Center to Cloud migration take?
It depends on the size of your instance, how many Marketplace apps you run, and how much configuration has accumulated. Atlassian offers migration programs, including FastShift for larger moves. We start with a read on your current setup so you get a realistic plan rather than a guess.
What is Atlassian Ascend?
Ascend is Atlassian’s program to move Data Center customers to Cloud over the three-year runway, with trials, incentives, and migration support. As a certified Solution Partner, we run the migration alongside it so the move fits how your teams actually work.
